AMA Warns Against Ivermectin

by | Sep 16, 2021 | COVID-19 | 36 comments

On September 1st, 2021 the American Medical Association (AMA) along with the American Pharmacists Association (AphA) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) put out a press release warning that they collectively “strongly oppose the ordering, prescribing, or dispensing of ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19 outside of a clinical trial (bold in the original).” The title was even more strident and ominous sounding as it called for (demanded?) “ending use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19”.

Their reasoning, if we could call it that, begins with the undisputed facts that Ivermectin is approved for certain parasites in humans, but not approved to prevent or treat COVID-19.

They fail to mention that the most common use of ivermectin in the US pre pandemic was for scabies, which is also not an approved indication in humans.

They go on to write that they are “alarmed by reports that outpatient prescribing for and dispensing of ivermectin have increased 24-fold since before the pandemic”, and “exponentially over the past few months.”

And because of the above they call for “an immediate end to the prescribing, dispensing and use of ivermectin.”

Depending on patient demographics anywhere from 20-90% of all outpatient prescriptions are used for unapproved indications. There are few cases of parasites in the US treated with ivermectin, but there are about a million cases of scabies a year, some of which are treated without ivermectin, but let’s say a million is the yearly ceiling for pre pandemic ivermectin prescriptions.

There have been 39 million cases of COVID-19 in the US so far. So a 24-fold rise in prescriptions for ivermectin, which has primarily been used as a preventive measure and is most commonly prescribed that way for 1-3 months at a time, doesn’t seem unreasonable, assuming of course that it works or there is evidence suggesting it might.

Doubling Down

They continue to provide some more of their reasoning, writing that the CDC and FDA have issued advisories along the same lines: i.e. ivermectin is not approved for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19.

Again they fail to mention the epidemic of dangerous prescribing for scabies that has been ongoing for decades and without any large randomized controlled trials to back it up.

All this time patients have had to rely on word of mouth and small, underfunded studies to prove to themselves that they are no longer infested with the severely itchy mites after a dose or two of ivermectin.

Next, they continue their appeal to authority: the NIH, WHO and Merck, the manufacturer of ivermectin, “all state there is insufficient evidence to support the use of ivermectin to treat COVID-19.”

But they have it wrong. What Merck actually said in their press release was even more incendiary: they insisted there was no evidence at all to support the use of ivermectin for COVID-19.

A few weeks later Merck issued another press release. This time for their new wonder pill that’s in the works for treating COVID-19 and which already has a $1.2 billion commitment from the federal government.

Ivermectin, an off patent, dirt cheap, Nobel prize winning drug that Merck gave away for free decades ago vs the promise of a new on patent antiviral that is set to make billions of dollars. No conflict of interest was disclosed, because billion dollar corporations don’t have those.

As with all these press releases and bureaucratic statements, Merk left out any discussion of the scores of studies on ivermectin conducted in tens of thousands of patients, or some of the more thorough meta analyses of those studies, which at least suggest, if not outright prove that ivermectin has a beneficial effect in treating COVID-19.

After the foregoing, the AMA switches into high gear insisting that the “use of ivermectin for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 has been demonstrated to be harmful to patients.”

As their sole example of this harm they write that calls to poison control centers have gone up 5 times from their pre-pandemic baseline.

They are careful not to mention what exactly that pre pandemic baseline was or if the calls turned out to be serious or not.

They are also careful not to mention if the call or calls were from a patient or patients who had resorted, out of desperation, to using the infamous horse paste version of the drug, and whether or not they had inadvertently used too much of the concentrate.

They quote a recent CDC advisory that emphasizes the potentially toxic effects of this drug (that, by the way, is safer than Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen, benadryl and beer).

Ivermectin can cause such serious symptoms as “nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.” Then before anyone has a chance to consider that those side effects might not be so bad compared to dying with COVID-19 or developing long COVID, they let loose with the real kicker: “Overdoses are associated with hypotension and neurologic effects such as decreased consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, coma and death.”

Overdoses of water will do the same thing.

So will overdoses of most drugs.

Why are people in danger of overdosing on horse ivermectin in the first place? Is it maybe because all the doctors are scared to prescribe human ivermectin with the correct directions for use?

A recent in-depth review of all available information on ivermectin safety done by a prominent pathologist confirms ivermectin’s nearly unmatched and excellent safety profile.

Perhaps we should warn everyone about the danger of listening to the AMA.

My major concern for others needing treatment down the line is that, with the fda/cdc/ama ivermectin disinformation campaign, will come real threat to GOOD DOCTOR’S licenses. I have it on 100% good authority that ivermectin h. p. can , as of today, still be purchased at tractor supply for now near 3 times the cost of one year ago. all You horse people may want to stock up in case the evil ones try to interfere with people treating their own horses

My daughter works at a Tractor Supply and indeed the demand for the IVM Paste “IverCare” is higher than ever. In fact, people are purchasing it online and so what is sent to their store is already spoken for. The cost is minimal…it is the getting of it that’s the challenge. It’s a sorry state of affairs that our government is more interested in making money than saving peoples’ lives! Thank you Dr. Haider for all you and your colleagues are doing to help us!

I agree with you, unfortunately we appear to be living in a fascist environment of fear mongering and mainstream media disinformation. If patients and physicians don’t demand autonomy it will soon be taken away.

Ivermectin for people is different than it is for animals.

Ivermecin is ivermectin, regardless if it’s for humans or animals. How about Zinc? Vitamin C? The molecule doesn’t “know” if it’s for humans or animals. It is true that the inert ingredients (i.e., apple flavor) may not be formulated for humans, but ivermectin itself doesn’t magically change based on target.

In general ivermectin is ivermectin, but there can be variations in absorption characteristics even with off-brand human medications, which is why patients on psychiatric drugs may find it difficult to switch to a generic medication. The digestive tracts of mammals also differ and there may be metabolic breakdown of a drug prior to absorption into the bloodstream along with other factors that affect absorption. One paper found that predicting interspecies bioavailability was not at all straightforward.

Thankfully if the worst happens concerning ivermectin, there are options in the early antiviral stage. It will be tough to stop 1% Johnson’s baby shampoo in saline nose flush / mouth wash-gargle / eyewash. or 1/2 tsp povidone-iodine 10% in a $2 bottle of saline nasal spray or the newest being used in a “multi” action type protocol by one doctor at the FLCCC, ???? .25 percent “bleach” with an ????? certain amount of hydrogen peroxide in a nebulizer. this treatment needs better illumination than I received with my first hearing about it.

Results out of India PROVE that Ivermectin and HCQ are excellent and ethical treatments and/or prophylactics for Covid, but the reports are buried in search engine results. This describes some of the results: https://www.thedesertreview.com/news/national/ivermectin-obliterates-97-percent-of-delhi-cases/article_6a3be6b2-c31f-11eb-836d-2722d2325a08.html What confuses us is there are only two possible reasons why the WHO, CDC, FDA, AMA, NIH and others do not want to allow off label uses of drugs for COVID – they want people to die or it’s all about the money!

You might not want to trust information coming from India, Kim. There’s corruption there too, not just the US.

Thank you for the information on Ivermectin and thank you for pointing out the failings of the AMA in this regard.
My father-in-law was a GP and general surgeon and active in the AMA, at the time they were fighting against socialized medicine. As time wore on, they became nothing more than a political organization dancing to the tunes of profits, and there were BIG profits from Big Pharma.
Doctors are losing/have lost not only the respect of their patients, but also their TRUST. If they do not rise up and take a stand, not harshly, but by informing their patients, such as you have done, they will suffer irreparable loss.
Just two side notes:
Ivermectin is FLYING on the shelves, we know this is true because we are good friends with a compounding pharmacist and they are constantly having to reorder Ivermectin and have had to set up a special section of the pharmacy just to deal with the Ivermectin orders and pick-ups. Their salesman for their supplier said it was the same everywhere he went. This leads me to believe that Americans are becoming aware of what is transpiring AND they are doing so without the help of their doctors- which does not bode well for the doctor.
Also, I saw on Dr. Merritt’s chat last Monday that some orders from India were being held up in Customs in NY. One chatterer had said theirs had been there almost 4 weeks, and another chatterer said theirs had come right through.

The word is getting out, everyone who is prescribing it is overwhelmed with patient requests and we just spoke with a compounding pharmacy that bought up everything available from two separate suppliers. Prices are rising almost everywhere unfortunately due to supply/demand economics.

My local doctor is just another that follows the government propaganda. He wouldn’t allow a prescription of HCQ or Ivermectin unless Dr. Fauci approved it. Dr. Fauci is nothing but a political hack!

How Much Longer Will Ivermectin be Available? I heard on the Mark Levin Podcast tonight that pharmacies are forbidden from prescribing HCQ and Ivermectin. Is this now true? I have relied on this from Dr Haider for 9 months now to keep from getting COVID-19. I have not had any negative side effects whatsoever and I have not gotten COVID-19 either. I was able to get my Rx for Ivermectin filled a couple of weeks ago. Will I no longer be able to obtain Ivermectin? This is all a result of the disastrous Biden administration and the implementation of Marxism in America. If you ever wanted to know what it is like to live in North Korea or China, this is what it’s like. The government controls every aspect of your life. The government is now stepping in between you and your doctor! The propaganda propagated by the mainstream media is unbelievable.

My insurance would not cover the full script, so the pharmacy (Walgreens) said I could pay out of pocket for the remainder. Crazy price gouging going on to the tune of $10 per 3 mg tablet. But then the pharmacist was blocked from ordering more than 40 3mg tabs at one time. Finally they received the remainder of IVM but are now saying they received a memo forbidding them to fill any IVM script for dosages higher than label use – in other words anything that indicates its for COVID. They said they are required to contact the physician before filling it. Have you heard from any pharmacies Dr. H?

Yes, local pharmacies are refusing to fill ivermectin and calling the state medical boards to report doctors who send them prescriptions – apparently this has come straight from the CDC.

There are still many mail order pharmacies and some local ones that are standing up to the CDC and refusing to go along with the fascist agenda. We are constantly researching the best pharmacies in every area so our patients have access to the meds they need.

Hi Dr. Haider,

Would you please be able to cite high quality studies and meta-analyses supporting the benefits of ivermectin in treating covid? It’s been a year now, and there are a plethora of studies indicating that it is not useful. It’s hard to find out what’s true from what’s wrong.. Any help would be much appreciated! Cheers
